MODULE 3: CREATING EFFECTIVE LESSON PLANS WITH AI AND DESIGN THINKING

This module provided us with a clear perspective on how AI can transform English language teaching. Initially, tools like Teaching App, LM Arena, Claude-opus, Qween-235b-no-thinking, and Google AI Studio felt overwhelming due to their novelty. However, as we became more familiar with them, we realized they could assist us in creating content from scratch and enhancing our prompt writing, which in turn boosted our creativity.

We learned how to use these AI tools to build lesson plans step by step, following the MINEDUCYT framework. This involved organizing lessons into three phases: l Activate (class 1), l Practice (class 2), and l Produce (class 3), with distinct pre-, during-, and post-activities for each phase. Seeing examples from our instructor helped us apply theoretical concepts in a practical, real-world context.

Putting it all together, we developed a high school English lesson plan for a weekly 225-minute class. We included teaching tips designed to enhance student understanding. This hands-on experience allowed us to fully comprehend how AI can support instructional design. Working with the Gemini tool demonstrated how AI can make planning more efficient and creative.

Ultimately, this course revealed the practical applications of AI in teaching English, especially in creating lesson plans and facilitating active learning. We discovered that various AI tools, such as Teaching App, LM Arena, Claude-opus, Qween-235b-no-thinking, and Google AI Studio, can assist in developing both creative and well-organized materials. These tools are most effective when our prompts are clear and specific, as we learned while working with Google AI Studio. We designed a game-style app that features an AI coach for speaking practice. This coach provides instant and personalized feedback on grammar and pronunciation, showcasing how AI can enhance the way students practice speaking. We also utilized AI to adhere to educational standards, such as the MINEDUCYT framework, ensuring our lessons remained aligned with teaching guidelines. This module helped us recognize that AI is not merely an auxiliary tool; it can play a central role in lesson planning. We learned to use AI to create lessons that are more dynamic and engaging according to student needs. Overall, AI made teaching both more creative and effective.
